A series of paintings in protest against the theory of 'positive thinking', which promotes the idea that anyone can do anything if only they put their minds to it.
Reality shows that this sort of thinking is nonsense: we can all of us, during our lives, be held back by outside circumstances and influences from within that we have very little or no control over. Positive thinking leaves us unprepared for the difficult sides of life which we all have to face. Perhaps most importantly, thinking that whatever happens to people is basically their own fault, can easily lead to extreme callousness where others are concerned.
